The European Commission announced its approval of a planner merger between American Airlines and US Airways, which would create the largest airline on the planet, as long as the company divests a single slot at London’s Heathrow airport. Further, the Commission said it would require the new company to ensure continuing competition within the route between London and Philadelphia, which has been of particular concern among regulators. The US Department of Justice is still reviewing the deal. If cleared, the business plan would be a way out of bankruptcy for American Airlines owner AMR Corp., so long as its restructuring plan is approved by a US federal judge.
