Australia: Woolworths’ supermarket buyout given clearance

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has announced its approval of a buyout of Supa IGA supermarket in ACT’s Hawker by supermarket giant Woolworths, say reports. The ACCC said in a statement that “rigorous” probing of the deal yielded no significant competition concerns as the local market would still maintain several viable competitors. The supermarket sector throughout Australia has been closely watched by the ACCC as of late, though the approval of this merger passed without conflict.
