US: White House announces choice for FTC commissioner

US President Barack Obama announced plans to nominate Terrell McSweeny to become a commissioner on the Federal Trade Commission. McSweeny currently sits as chief counsel for competition policy at the US Department of Justice’s antitrust division. If approved, he would fill the Democratic slop open on the FTC that was left open by current Chairwoman Edith Ramirez. According to reports, that vacancy, which left a 2-2 split in the FTC between Democrats and Republicans, has concerned some experts over deadlocks and inaction. The White House announced the news Friday; the US Senate will need to confirm McSweeny’s appointment.
