UK: Concerns lead to forced divesture of Global Radio stations

The UK’s Competition Commission has ruled that Global Radio must divest radio stations located in seven geographical areas if it wishes to proceed with its acquisition of GMG Radio. The deal is valued at more than $106 million. While the deal may be a bit of a disappointment for the UK’s largest radio conglomerate, the Commission has announced that it will allow Global Radio to make licensing deals to the winning bidders of the stations is must divest. According to reports, Global Radio had originally offered to divest just three of its stations to earn regulatory approval. The Commission required more, however, after finding competition and advertising issues in several geographical regions.
