New Zealand: Gas metering company buyout merges market leaders

The Commerce Commission of New Zealand has approved of a deal that combines the two largest gas metering companies on the North Island. Vector Limited will buy Contact Energy Limited’s natural gas metering operations after the regulator found the deal would not harm competition in concerned markets. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. Despite the approval, the Commission has noted that it may initiate a study into gas metering services to more thoroughly determine whether competition would be limited by the deal; if need be, the Commission may appeal the case to the Minister of Commerce.
