US: Baer, Ramirez plea for stable antitrust funding

In their first major appearance since their appointments, Assistant Attorney General and head of the Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division William Baer and Federal Trade Commission Chairwoman Edith Ramirez made pleas against additional budget cuts that may hamper the federal agencies’ abilities to ensure healthy competition throughout the nation. According to Chairwoman Ramirez, budget cuts have led to the encouragement of early retirements at the FTC and downgraded hiring. Assistant Attorney General Baer stated that the DOJ is “looking to do everything” to prevent furloughs. The sequestration’s effects on federal resources have, like all government offices, affected antitrust regulations; President Barack Obama is in talks with lawmakers about future spending plans.
