Bulgaria: Antitrust leader wants criminal liability for cartels

The head of Bulgaria’s Commission for Protection of Competition Petko Nokolov has revealed in an interview that he believes members of cartels should be held criminally responsible for their violations and hopes a discussion of the matter will begin among authorities. Nokolov made the remarks in an interview for 24 Hours Daily. While the authority is currently focusing on fighting tender manipulation by working with contracting authorities, Nokolov said he hopes to officially make abuse of market power a criminal offense. Additionally, the antitrust head said that while he is not looking to increase the power of the Commission, also known as the KZK, a budget increase and laboratory updates would prove useful to complete investigations within a shorter timeframe.
