Just weeks after Ryanair’s second bid to takeover rival Aer Lingus was blocked by antitrust authorities, the Netherlands Consumer Authority has hit Ryanair with a nearly $478,000 fine. According to the authority, the low-budget airliner breached antitrust laws in its online booking system as it offered airfares to consumers without complete transparency concerning fees and surcharges. The CA found that consumers paid considerably more than what was advertised and that its booking procedures were in violation of consumer protection laws. In a statement, Director of the CA Bernadette van Buchem said, “All costs that consumers cannot avoid paying should be included in airfares that are initially displayed.”
