The US Justice Department has reportedly filed a lawsuit to block a proposed merger between Anheuser-Busch InBev and Grupo Modelo, arguing that the deal would result in higher beer prices for Americans. Anheuser-Busch has proposed to buy the Mexican-based Grupo Modelo. The merger would result in 46 percent market control for the combined entity, as Angeuser-Busch is the top US brewer and Grupo Modelo is the third-largest. MillerCoors, the second-largest in the nation, controls just 29 percent of the market. While Anheuser-Busch has vowed to fight in court, the Justice Department says the merger would result in a significant loss of competition in the US beer market.
