US: Prosecutors want maximum sentence for food giant price-fixer

Prosecutors are reportedly seeking the maximum sentence to a former agribusiness exec as he faces sentencing February 5 in a US District Court. Pebble Beach resident Scott Salyer has pleaded guilty to price-fixing and racketeering charges; he now faces a prison term of up to seven years. Salyer pleaded guilty 10 months ago to the charges, which sprang a five-year federal investigation into the US food sector. Salyer was ultimately accused of operating SK Foods LP of misleading consumers and misbranding products, colluding with its competition to fix prices and rig bids, and altering lab tests on “substandard” products it sold. SK Foods was once the nation’s leading producer of processed tomato products.
