Egypt: Competition authority ensures to better telecom market, made crucial since 2011 political riots
Among the recent, intense political turmoil that Egypt has faced in recent years, reports are turning towards the growing strength of the nation’s telecommunications sector, which played a vital role in communicating with the world the ongoings of the 2011 anti-Mubarak riots even as the government attempted to shut down the internet. Years later, the Egyptian Copetition Authority has taken a new role to ensure that communication continues. Since 2008, established telecom firms in the nation have reported a 23.1 percent growth rate and, at the end of 2011, had 83.8 million mobile service subscribers. Additionally, Egypt’s broadband Internet sector is expected to exceed revenues of $11 billion by 2018. To ensure this growth, the Egyptian Competition Authority has agreed to investigate claims of poor service, opening a probe late last year into alleged collusion between telecom providers who were raising prices of prepade mobile credit cards.
