E.U.: Ruling may hamper Commission’s ability to seize documents in future probes

The European Union General Court has overturned a ruling by the European Commission to raid companies and seize company documents, a decision that experts say may hamper the antitrust authority’s stretch of power in future investigations. The European Commission in 2009 had raided documents of Prysmian SpA and Nexans SA, two power provider companies being investigated for price-fixing. The EU General Court partially annulled the decision to seize documents, however, declaring the Commission had too-wide of a scope to gather information and did not have reasonable grounds to order an inspection of that magnitude.
