DOJ responds to public on e-books, Apple Settlement

 |  July 23, 2012

The U.S. Department of Justice issued a response to public comments with regard to the proposed settlement of the e-books antitrust case against Apple and five major American publishers. “After careful consideration of the comments,” they wrote, “the United States has concluded that the proposed Final Judgment will provide an effective and appropriate remedy for the antitrust violations alleged in the Complaint…” The DOJ insists that the rising prices of e-books were the result of collusion between the publishers. While News Corp.’s (NWS, NWSA) HarperCollins Publishers LLC, Hachette Book Group Inc. and Simon & Schuster Inc. have all agreed to settle, the case is proceeding against Apple and the other publishers, Pearson PLC’s (PSO, PSON.LN) Penguin Group USA and Macmillan, a unit of Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck GmbH.
