The province of Manitoba has passed new consumer protection legislation regulating cellphone contracts. Among other changes, the legislation requires companies to disclose and explain all charges, fees and terms; limits the ability of companies to make unilateral changes to contract terms; permits consumer cancellations at any time, and; restricts automatic contract renewals. The legislation also gives the Consumer Protection Office the power to charge fines for non-compliance, with fees escalating for repeated offenses.
The new legislation will take effect September 15, 2012.
