Spirit Airlines Ceases Operations After Rescue Talks With White House Collapse

 |  May 3, 2026

Spirit Airlines has announced it is shutting down its operations after failing to secure a $500m (£368m) financial rescue package from the Trump administration, according to BBC. The low-cost carrier confirmed on Saturday that negotiations with the US government had broken down, ending hopes of a last-minute deal that could have kept the airline in business.

In a statement published on its website early Saturday, Spirit said it had, with “great disappointment”, “started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately”. The move resulted in the cancellation of all scheduled flights, leaving passengers stranded at airports across the country and creating uncertainty for thousands of employees.

The airline had been attempting to recover after its second bankruptcy filing in recent years. However, its financial position worsened following the US-Israel war in Iran, which contributed to a sharp increase in jet fuel prices and added further pressure to its recovery efforts, according to BBC.

“All Spirit flights have been cancelled, and Spirit Guests should not go to the airport,” the company said in its statement.

Despite receiving notifications about the cancellations, some passengers still arrived at airports with their luggage on Saturday morning, only to find there were no departing flights. Spirit’s customer service operations have also been suspended, leaving travelers with limited immediate support.

Spirit said customers who purchased tickets directly through the airline using credit or debit cards would receive automatic refunds to their original payment method. However, passengers who booked using vouchers, travel credits, or airline points may have to wait for a bankruptcy court to decide how compensation will be handled, according to BBC. Travelers who booked through third-party agents have been instructed to contact those providers directly.

The airline also stated it would not be able to reimburse passengers for emergency hotel stays or replacement flights booked due to the sudden cancellations.

In the same statement, Spirit chief executive Dave Davis said: “In March 2026, we reached an agreement with our bondholders on a restructuring plan that would have allowed us to emerge as a go-forward business.”
