The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has appointed a new advocate general after a French magistrate died suddenly last year.
Jean Richard de la Tour will replace Yvet Bot, who had worked as one of the court’s 11 advocates general since 2006.
Advocates general write opinions to help judges decide on their rulings. De la Tour’s mandate will run until October 2024.
He has previously worked as a member of the criminal convictions revisions committee at one of France’s highest courts and was president of the board of directors of France’s national institution for notarial training (INFN) – one of the most prestigious schools in the field.
While the ECJ has one judge from each EU country, there are only 11 advocates general, six of which are always assigned to the largest member states and the remaining five on a rotating basis.
