Noncompete agreements are contractual provisions that restrict employees from joining competitors or launching competing businesses after leaving their jobs. While these agreements are legal in some contexts, they have often been criticized for being overly restrictive and subject to abuse. Per a statement, the FTC aims to spotlight how such agreements harm workers and to clarify the agency’s enforcement priorities.

The event is being organized by the FTC’s Labor Task Force, which was established by Chairman Andrew N. Ferguson. The task force was created to focus on deceptive, unfair, and anticompetitive labor practices that negatively affect American workers. According to a statement, the workshop follows recent enforcement actions that eliminated certain restrictive agreements, letters issued to healthcare companies warning them about anticompetitive noncompetes, and a broad request for information seeking public tips that could guide future enforcement efforts.

The workshop will feature remarks from FTC Commissioners, testimony from individuals affected by unfair noncompete practices, and commentary from subject matter experts. A full agenda and list of speakers will be released ahead of the event, and a livestream link will be posted to the FTC’s official website on the morning of October 8.
