Colombia: Companies demand better Telecommunications regulation

Colombia’s fourth International Congress of Free Competition ended this week, with a panel joined by Colombia’s leading telecommunications firms. Une-Tigo, Colombia Telecom and Claro took the stage, making a joint call for better and swifter regulation in their sector.

    Marcelo Cataldo Franco, president of Tigo-Une joined Alfonso Gómez Palacio of Colombia Telecom and Juan Carlos Archila, vice-president of International Relations with América Móvil (Claro). The three expressed their concerns with the slow pace of growth with the telecomms sector in Colombia. “We are facing a sustained shrinking of -2%, which is far lower than the GDP growth” said Mr. Cataldo.

    “Correcting these failings in the market will be important in order to meet the challenge of making this sector a hot-bed of innovation and a leader in the region. Unless we make decisions regarding a rulebook that will promote investment, we could go back to the state we had a few years ago.” said Alfonso Gómez.
