Spain’s Markets and Competition Office, known as the CNMC, said late last week that it is looking into allegations of anticompetitive conduct by national railway operator Renfe and a subsidiary of German Rail.
Reports say Renfe and two of its subsidiaries, along with German Rail’s Transfesa and other related companies, are suspected of limiting competition in the industry, particularly in the market for transport of auto parts. The CNMC said the behavior could constitute abuse of market dominance.
According to reports, the case was launched by Spain’s Private Freight Operators Association.
Reports say authorities have been skeptical of the ongoing liberalization process of Spain’s railway industry. According to reports, national railway Renfe still controls about 80 percent of the industry.
