South Africa: Even with Neotel acquisition, Vodacom still faces spectrum squeeze

Wireless operator Vodacom is looking to acquire Neotel to boost its spectrum capacity, but according to reports, even a takeover will not adequately fulfill the company’s needs.

    Reports say Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub admitted that while a takeover of Neotel will give the company “breathing room,” it will not be enough to fulfill the company’s plans for investment and infrastructure.

    Vodacom reached an agreement to acquire Neotel last May from its current owner, Tata Communications of India for about $676 million.
