South Africa: Probe launched into in-demand alternative energy source

The Competition Commission of South Africa has reportedly launched a probe into the liquefied petroleum gas industry as the fuel becomes a crucial alternative energy source following rising energy costs and power cuts, reports say.

    The Commission launched the inquiry to ensure the proper function of the market, though added that there are concerns of distorted competition due to limited supply of the petroleum gas, a fact that may “confer substantial market power” to resellers, the watchdog said.

    According to reports, the Commission will focus its inquiry on supply bottlenecks and potential incentives for anticompetitive practices among LPG suppliers

    The probe marks the second market inquiry launched by the Commission since it was given the power to conduct such competition investigations into entire markets.
