US: $5B joint space venture rockets into operations

    Satellite and rocket-manufacturer Orbital Sciences and rocket booster maker ATK announced plans for a new joint venture Tuesday, creating a new company to be called Orbital ATK. Reports say the new firm could be home to up to 13,000 employees.

    The venture, which was described by the firms as a “merger of equals,” follows a project the companies are already working on together. Reports say Orbital and ATK are currently both working on an air-launched rocket for Stratolaunch.
