American Airlines and US Airways are reportedly in settlement talks with the US Department of Justice in what could amount to a potential end to the DOJ’s lawsuit against the airlines’ proposed merger.
Two anonymous sources said the parties are currently talking about a possible agreement. One source said the airlines are offering to divest airport gates, as well as takeoff and landing rights, at Washington, D.C.’s Reagan National Airport.
The sources confirmed, however, that formal settlement talks have not yet begun.
A trial is set to begin next month as the DOJ looks to prevent the airlines’ merger, which would create the world’s largest airline. The lawsuit has sparked controversy, however, as various state attorneys general take sides.
