UK: Cement market so anticompetitive it ‘defies logic,’ says import head

The managing director of cement importer Eicem sent a letter to the Competition Commission slamming the cement market throughout the UK and the EU as so anticompetitive that it “defies reality and logic.” Peter Goode is just one of several company heads asking the Commission to take action as the regulator continues its investigation. The Commission’s preliminary findings were released last May and showed evidence of anticompetitive behavior. Cement giants Lafarge, Tarmax, Cemex and Hanson were all targeted in the investigation. In his letter, Goode claimed cement imports to Ireland only began in recent months following difficulty entering the market though what he claims was an exclusivity agreement between a firm and another manufacturer.
