US: FTC’s Ramirez refocuses fight against patent trolls

Federal Trade Commission Chairwoman Ramirez took to the podium on Thursday to address the fight against patent trolls, revealing plans in Washington to put a stop to the practice. Ramirez said in her speech that the FTC would enforce its Section 6(b) and Section 5 powers to fight patent trolls, which acquire essential patents – often without manufacturing any product – to bring legislation against other companies that use them. Patent lawsuits are currently the most common type of litigation in the country. The FTC has focused in recent years on the practice, especially since Congress took on the matter with its America Invents Act in 2011, which, according to experts, remains largely ineffective.
