US: City challenges Major League Baseball’s Congressional antitrust exemption

Major League Baseball is being sued by the city of San Jose, which accuses the sports league of a ‘blatant conspiracy’ to keep the Oakland Athletics out. According to reports, the lawsuit directly challenges the MLB’s exemption to antitrust law, which was established more than 90 years ago, to argue that “modern baseball in squarely within the realm of interstate commerce,” according to reported court documents. San Jose is attempting to fight the MLB over geographical territorial rights owned by the Giants to prevent the Athletics from coming to the city from Oakland. Members of the San Jose city council released statements following the filing of the suit defending their decision to sue due to “the lack of response from Major League Baseball” on the controversy. The MLB denies any wrongdoing and describes the suit as an “unfounded attack.”
