Hong Kong: Will new Competition Law break grocery dominance?

While a year remains until the new legislation is to take effect, Hong Kong’s first competition law may bring relief to grocery shoppers that are affected by the dominance of two chains, ParknShop and Wellcome. The Federation of Trade Unions last year accused the two chains of price-fixing. Analysts are now looking at the new Competition Law and what effects it may have in the economy, especially if whether it could break the dominance of the two grocery chains. The Commerce and Economic Development Bureau, however, has said that it does not have an estimate as to when the new Competition Commission and an additional tribunal may be in place to review antitrust complaints.
