E.U.: Commission looks to expand powers over state aid

While the European Commission currently has the power to investigate competition issues within entire industries, the authority has announced it wants the additional power to investigate state aid granted within entire industries as well. In proposals published by the Commission on Wednesday, the antitrust authority says it would like these powers as part of efforts of state aid rule reformations. The E.U.’s 27 member states will need to grant approval for the E.C. to gain this authority. If approved, entire sectors the postal or healthcare markets would be under authority of the European Commission when it comes to cases involving state aid.
