Several telecommunications operators have expressed support for the adoption of an antitrust bill that would set market share caps. Avantel, Azteca Comunicaciones, Directv, ETB, Movistar, UNE and Tigo have jointly released their support for the bill, which was submitted last October. The companies cited a study by Fedesarrollo, which says that Colombians pay higher prices than necessary – costing the nation about $2.6 billion – due to a telecom market that isn’t competitive enough. The companies who support the bill are all competitors to Claro, Colombia’s largest telecom provider. If passed, the bill would prevent an operator from having more than 30 percent of overall market revenues.
