U.K.: OFT begins first examination of NHS merger

The OFT has begun examining a potential merger between Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals Foundation Trust and Poole Hospital Foundation Trust. This is the first time the OFT will review a merger of two public hospitals, though the OFT said in a statement they expect the review to be the “first of a number” of similar mergers involving National Health Service foundation trusts. Until the Health Act 2012, NHS mergers were reviewed by the Cooperation and Competition Panel.
