Claro-Digicel merger under scrutiny

Superintendencia de Competencia (SC), El Salvador’s competition regulator, will review a new application for the acquisition of Digicel El Salvador by America Movil’s (AM’s) local unit Claro. The SC has 90 days to allow, deny, and otherwise evaluate the deal and impose conditions if necessary. The SC’s imposition of a condition on AM’s earlier March 2011 attempt to acquire Digicel – that Claro return 20 MHz of spectrum to be reserved for new players – resulted in the end of that deal. On March 28, 2012 AM initiated the instant application now under review.
