Trade regulators across the USA, including ITA, NIST, and USPTO, are asking for input from stakeholders on how U.S. companies engage in standard setting and adopt standards for growth, especially concerning critical and emerging technologies.
There will be a public listening session on September 20, 2023, from 1 to 5 p.m. ET. To speak at the session, people interested must register in person by September 13, 2023. To attend in person or virtually without speaking, registration must be concluded by September 18, 2023. Written comments will be accepted until September 29, 2023.

On May 4, 2023, the White House released the U.S. Government National Standards Strategy for Critical and Emerging Technology, aiming to boost private sector-led standards development for U.S. competitiveness and national security. Key areas include communication tech, semiconductors, AI, biotech, clean energy, and quantum tech. Widely adopted standards are seen as crucial for market access and growth.
The Strategy outlines four objectives: (1) investment, (2) participation, (3) workforce, and (4) integrity and inclusivity, with specific actions to encourage private and public engagement in standard development.
