Crowell & Moring Strengthens EU Sanctions and Export Controls Capabilities

Truyens brings experience advising on international trade and regulatory issues, including time spent both in private practice and as in-house counsel at an EU-based financial institution. Per a statement outlining her background, her work has spanned economic sanctions, export controls, supply chain risk, and commercial disputes, with a client base that includes financial services companies, shipping and logistics providers, chemical traders, defense contractors, and energy producers.

Her practice centers on compliance and enforcement-related matters, including export controls, anti-money laundering and anti-bribery requirements, and other regulatory regimes. According to a statement describing her role, Truyens guides organizations through enforcement actions, regulatory inquiries, and criminal investigations tied to international trade and compliance obligations.

In addition to trade controls, Truyens advises companies on environmental, social, and governance requirements arising from recent EU legislation. These include the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, the Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products, and the EU Forced Labor Regulation. Per a statement from the firm, her work also extends to representing businesses in commercial litigation and arbitration, as well as resolving disputes through mediation.

She added that Truyens’ arrival underscores the firm’s commitment to expanding its European trade and regulatory capabilities across the EU, the UK, and the United States.

Before joining Crowell & Moring, Truyens led the sanctions, export controls, and compliance practice at Schoups BV. According to a statement announcing the move, she is joined in Brussels by associate Celine De Buck, who also previously worked at Schoups BV. De Buck focuses on economic sanctions, export controls, commercial law, dispute resolution, and broader trade-related compliance matters.

Truyens’ career also includes roles at two international law firms and four years as in-house legal counsel for an international banking and insurance group in Brussels prior to joining Schoups BV in 2020, according to a statement summarizing her professional history.
