In a strategic move towards economic deregulation, President Javier Milei has chosen economist Alexis Pirchio to lead the National Commission for the Defense of Competition (CNDC) in Argentina. The CNDC, a crucial entity under the Secretariat of Commerce, plays a pivotal role in reducing the state’s control over concentration maneuvers in key markets such as food, agriculture, and industry.
The appointment of Alexis Pirchio as the new president of CNDC was made in December, marking a significant step in Milei’s agenda for economic liberalization. Pirchio is no stranger to the commission, having previously served during the government of Mauricio Macri. His prior role involved heading the National Directorate of Anticompetitive Conducts under the leadership of Esteban Greco, then president of the Commission.
Notably, Pirchio’s past tenure witnessed the approval of a historic merger between Cablevisión and Telecom, a decision that left a lasting impact on the commission’s history. The move was seen as a catalyst for facilitating competition within the industry.
Alexis Pirchio is the former Managing Director of Branded Content & Analytics at PYMNTS, and brings a wealth of experience to his new role. His background includes a stint as a Teaching Assistant at the Universidad de Buenos Aires, along with positions at Global Economics Group, Market Platform Dynamics, and Competition Policy International. Pirchio holds a Master’s degree from the Universidad del CEMA.
As Milei’s administration gears up for economic reforms, the appointment of Alexis Pirchio underscores a commitment to fostering competition and dismantling regulatory barriers in key sectors of Argentina’s economy.
