Australia: New taxi cop to oversee Uber

Transport Minister Dean Nalder yesterday released a long-awaited discussion or ‘Green’ paper which suggested a new industry cop wielding beefed-up powers and penalties to keep all players in line.

    But taxi plate-owners complaining their investments have been de-valued by the arrival of ride-sharing app Uber X have been left disappointed, with Mr Nalder suggesting it was not the Government’s job to protect them from innovation.

    “While it is recognised that taxi plate investors have purchased plates in good faith, the economic value of a business should be based on a superior customer proposition rather than the scarcity of supply or government regulation,” the Minister’s foreword says.
