Estonia: Report shows need for mining shakeup

Estonia’s competition authorities have issued a new report on the nation’s mining market to find that four major oil shale mining companies currently dominate the market and must meet new competition. The Estonian Competition Authority has announced that it will help to implement new competition into the sector with an auction to release new extracting permits in efforts to eliminate “advantages” the four major players currently experience, according to reports. The watchdog found that the barrier for entry into the market is a tough one, as newcomers cannot access oil shale; the authority is now looking to more evenly distribute the resource to enhance the status of underdogs.
