EU: Yearlong probe into E5 telecom giants closes

 |  March 7, 2013

The European Commission has officially closed a yearlong investigation launched into five of Europe’s major telecommunications companies. According to the Commission, the probe was launched in connection to how the companies – Deutsche Telecom, France Télécom, Telefónica, Vodafone and Telecom Italia – are developing the standardization of future mobile communications services. The standardization work, however, has recently been transferred to the mobile sector association GSMA, leading the Commission to drop the probe. The Commission has also noted that it “welcomes” this transfer of duty as it allows greater participation from stakeholders and reduces the risk for negative effects on competition in the market.
