As debate rages within Hong Kong as to regulators’ handling of free-to-air television licenses, reports say the Office of the Communications Authority is slated to announced the fate of 3G mobile licenses by the middle of this month, a decision that will affect millions of phone and data service consumers.
Ofca is set to decide whether all 3G licenses will be renewed, or whether to place all of the mup for auction. In a third option, the regulator could seize a portion of the spectrum and reserve it for a new competitor.
The decision was postponed but reports say authorities have denied that the delay was caused by the controversy regarding free-to-air TV licenses controversy.
Hong Kong’s wireless sector is run by four major players, all of which have denounced the idea of having a new market entrant.
