The OFT has referred Akzo Nobel’s proposed acquisition of Metlac to the Competition Commission. The OFT is concerned that the merger would remove a significant competitive constraint to Akzo Nobel, as the merging parties are two of the four main suppliers of metal packaging coatings in the EEA. Akzo Nobel is the leading player in the metal packaging coatings market.
Austria, Germany and Cyprus have already cleared the deal. The merger has also been notified to Russia, Turkey, and Pakistan.
