Russia: MTS and Vimpelcom mobile operators fined $500K for price-fixing Iphone 4S handsets
The Russian Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) last year alleged that MTS and Vimpelcom conspired to overcharge customers using the Iphone 4S and had set identical prices much higher. Both companies denied any wrongdoing, stressing the $1,000-plus USD price tags have been determined by the market. MTS said it increased prices for the iPhone 4S after the Russian rouble depreciated against the euro, but later cut the prices as new products from Samsung, Nokia and HTC entered the market. Both MTS and Vimpelcom will pay over $500,000 USD in settlement charges.
