US: Radio merger threatens duopoly, says consumer group

Consumer advocacy group Consumer Watchdog is sending warnings to the US Department of Justice that a proposed merger within the radio market would lead to a duopoly and harm competition.

    Reports say Consumer Watchdog is advising against the deal between station owner Cumulus Media and radio content provider Dial Group/Westwood One, describing the merger as “a tipping point” for consumers already facing fewer choices.

    The merger would see Cumulus Media acquire Dial Global and, according to the advocacy group, would lead to increased profits for the companies at the expense of consumer choice and company jobs.
