Brazil: Antitrust regulator expects more M&A activity in 2020

The expectation that Brazil’s economic growth will be sustainable, along with the ongoing program of privatization of public assets, will likely increase the number of mergers and acquisitions that antitrust regulator CADE reviews in 2020.

    CADE president Alexandre Barreto expects Boeing’s acquisition of Embraer to be assessed in the first sessions of the full board of the regulator in February. 

    CADE also intends to carry out greater direct activities with other regulatory agencies in the first half of the year, including in the civil aviation, telecommunication, and port sectors. 

    Barreto said the number of deals that CADE reviewed last year was 8% higher than in 2018, newspaper Valor Econômico reported. For this year, the expectation is that there will be around M&A 450 transactions in addition to the acquisition of Embraer by Boeing.
