Mexico: Telephone Operators warns of strike following IFT decision

A ruling by the Federal Telecommunications Institute of Mexico (IFT) demanding the separation of the Telmex company, owned by billionaire Carlos Slim, could lead to a strike by company employees, said the Secretary General of the National Union of Telephone Operators, Francisco Hernández Juárez.

    The measure dictated by the IFT, part of the telecommunications reform promoted by the previous federal government, is seen as part of the promotion of competition to give way to more companies in the telephony sector. However, workers have argued that no guarantees have been given to employees, whose rights have now been affected by the decision.

    “The institute wants us to send half of the workers to the new company, but the new company will be underfunded because it will subsidize the competition and because it will have to offer prices below market value… we have four recourses, we have a negotiating table and a strike plan for January 23 as an extreme resource to defend ourselves… ” said Hernández Juárez.
