Spain: CNMC authorizes Acciona’s entry into the railway sector

In order to promote greater competition in the Spanish rail transport sector, the National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) has authorized the entry of new players into this industry, beginning with the approval for Acciona (owners of Air Nostrum) to launch a high-speed passenger service to compete with the main operator in Spain, state-owned Renfe.

    The CNMC judged that the move would not significantly alter the market, but could increase competition in the transport sector. In addition, the agency said, it will help improve “the knowledge of companies facing the liberalization of rail transport in Spain in 2020.”

    On September 13, 2018, the CNMC approved a resolution on the new international rail transport service between the Spanish capital and Montpellier (reported by Ilsa), whose main objective is international passenger transport between the two cities. This concentration also implies a pooling of the experience and knowledge of both companies, Acciona and OFL, at a time of liberalization for the rail transport industry in the country.
