Mexico: IFT to probe alleged monopolistic practices in on-line video streaming sector

Mexico’s Federal Institute of Telecommunications (IFT) has announced a probe on a possible monopolistic practice in the markets for the production, distribution and sale of entertainment content transmitted via the Internet, which includes the distribution of electronic devices for the reproduction of such contents, and restricted television and audio services.

    The regulator’s procedure would seek to determine the existence of “… the commission of a relative monopolistic practice”, which refers to contracts or agreements meant to unduly displace other competitors, prevent their access to the market or set exclusive advantages in favor of one or more incumbent players.

    The regulator said that the investigation was motivated by a complaint and did not name the companies involved in the case.
