Mexico: Walmart gains entry to LP gas market

Up to 29 Walmart locations will be allowed to begin selling LP gas in containers of up to 10 kilograms in some cities of the State of Mexico.

    The permit is the first of its kind, since no outlet was authorized to store gas cylinders in warehouses. The permit for Walmart will be valid for 30 years as of July 16, 2018, and will only apply for LP gas in predetermined municipalities.

    According to Mexican competition regulator COFECE, LP gas prices increased 8 percent on average across various regions around the country, while the capital alone saw an increase of 30 percent when compared with prices rom early 2017, prompting an ongoing investigation over possible monopolistic practices.
