Colombia: Restructuring in chemical sector following Linde-Praxair deal

German industrial gas manufacturer Linde will sell most of its gas operations in North America and part of its operations in South America for an estimated US$3.3 billion, affecting its activities in Colombia. Linde reported that this divestment is intended to facilitate the merger process with US company Praxair and that it is conditional on the merger being executed.

    Last week, Linde and Praxair, which expect to close the merger in the second half of 2018, said they were negotiating the sale of assets in Latin America with Messer and CVC to get approval for the operation.

    Regarding Colombia, on the one hand there are Praxair Industrial Gases, Colombian Carbonic Liquid and Oxygen of Colombia (Oxycol). On the other hand, there are Linde Colombia, Linde Energy Services and Remeo Medical Services.

    The agreement must be endorsed, among other jurisdictions, by the Superintendency of Industry and Commerce (SIC), of Colombia, in a procedure that was launched in January 2018.
