Argentina: ‘Telefónica Law’ enters final stages

With little time before its approval, the so-called ‘Telefónica law’, recently made strides in its approval process by orders of the government of Mauricio Macri, entering the definition stage, and gaining critics as it goes.

    Known as “Telefonica law” for the advantages it gives to that Spanish multinational, it enables satellite television to be provided by telephone companies – a demand from the Spanish multinational – so that they can provide a sort of ‘quadruple play’ service and to allow them to use the passive infrastructure of the utilities companies.

    Telefonica and Claro are the direct beneficiaries of this norm, but for Clarín-Telecom the law also has a plus. The National Competition Commission (CNDC) would not endorse their merger unless the norm is sanctioned.
