Mexico: Companies Investigated by COFECE Win Tenders for Electric Meters

Mexican companies Industrias Unidas (IUSA) and Conymed, both linked to business magnate Carlos Peralta, were declared winners of a public tender process held by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) for the purchase and installation of electric energy meters. Notably, both companies are under investigation by the country’s competition authorities for having previously engaged in monopolistic practices.

    The tender counted with the participation of six different companies: Electrometer de las Americas, Industrias Unidas (IUSA); Controles y Medidores Especializados (Conymed); Protecsa Ingeniería; Ciudades Conectadas Netcity, and Sistemas de Alta Tensión Espejel. Only the first three complied with the technical evaluation.

    IUSA is owned by Carlos Peralta while Andrés Tort, Peralta’s brother-in-law, is the main shareholder at Conymed, according to an investigation by the activist organization Mexicanos Contra la Corrupción y Impunidad (MCCI).

    For its part, the CFE highlighted the tender for saving $384 million pesos in the acquisition of low voltage meters, which “is equivalent to 16 percent of the amount paid for the purchase of these equipment in 2017 …”
