Chile: Communist MP’s block sale of Channel 13 to business group

Communist Party members in Chile’s parliament have moved to block the purchase of one hundred percent of Channel 13 by the businessman Andrónizo Luksic, pointing to a “serious concentration of economic and political power”. This Tuesday they will appeal to the National Economic Prosecutor (FNE) to prevent the operation from happening.

    Deputy Camila Vallejo, head of the Communist faction, said that the concentration of media outlets in Chile is “already insulting”, and criticized that a public university “would encourage the concentration of media ownership and its privatization.”

    The legislator added that “we must understand that Chile needs a greater diversity of opinion and information and not just a hegemonic outlook”. The request to the National Economic Prosecutor will be in led of attorney Luis Cuello, to which will be added an appeal before the National Television Council.
